Amanda Phillips and Alexander Mitchell will work as a Choreographer-Composer team with other artists to develop and research praxis for Collaboration.

"Immersion" is a creative partnership based on the notion of improvisation and interdisciplinary art practice through text, movement, sound and image. An immersive and dynamic environment of responses, shifts and feedback between movement and music, and the body and space, in an intercultural setting, will provoke both known and found patterns and push the body and the music to find new dimensions and unknown limits.

The interest is in how improvisation can continually inform, renew and transform the body, language and sound. In this environment the investigation will approach and reapproach the polarities of both silence and bombarding sound dimensions, and the states of stillness and chaos within the body. The emphasis of the process and the outcome is on testing how set frameworks of improvisation can be captured and found and what stimuli allows that response to emerge and be re-experienced and re-recorded.

Between the self and the performing self and between two cultures, the boundaries of identity have an undercurrent of culture where we may have primal pre-recorded responses to scenarios.

Amanda says that the nature of this residency was instigated by a comment from her friend Lee Ching-Chun, Artistic Associate of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan: “She said to me, why is it that Australian dance is so frenetic and bold and yet to walk around in the main cities there, the people seem so relaxed? And why is it that in Taipei the streets and traffic are congested and frantic, yet we have a calmness and tranquillity in our dance?”

This question is the starting point for the collaboration.

After the innovative 3D dance video “Experimentia”, Amanda & Alex keep experimenting new ways with dance. The audience will be seeing a brand new experiment: 3D video combining live music & dance.
